Us in a NutShell

K'ONJO means beautiful in our native language, Amharic, and a beautiful cup of coffee is what we hope to bring to you.

As kids growing up in Ethiopia, gathering to roast and enjoy a cup of coffee with relatives, friends, and visitors, was always a staple in our home and we’ve held onto that tradition ever since. In a traditional coffee ceremony the coffee grounds are brewed three times, with each round of coffee carrying a different name. The first round being called አቦል abol, the second ቶና tona and the third በረካ baraka meaning ‘To Be Blessed’.

In combining our love of coffee, family, and tradition, we created K’onjo coffee. We chose the sunflower as our logo because it symbolizes friendship, loyalty and strong bonds, nourishing yourself and others, and the brightening of moods’, which is what we hope this coffee will bring to you. In the sunflower we have included the first letter of our children’s name, with the Bee representing my wife and business parter, Brenda. From the taste testing to the packaging, to the shipping, K’onjo coffee is truly a family affair.

As Pascal Mercier once said “We leave something of ourselves behind when we leave a place, we stay there, even though we go away. And there are things in us that we can find again only by going back there.”
